Winter Steelhead begin to arrive around the first of December. Little silver bullets. Many of the early fish are of hatchery origin, and are typically a little smaller than average. As the season progresses there are wild fish arriving as well as wild brood stock fish. As we near Spring, there are some early fish, Wild fish, and brood fish all mixed together. Sizes vary from day to day, as well as the numbers of fish available. An average coastal Steelhead ranges from 8 to 12 pounds. However, there are larger ones as well, and often nice fish in the mid to upper teens.
We primarily side drift, and drift fish small baits of eggs with some type of color. Adding puff balls, corkies, and plastic eggs for added effect. Depending on conditions. We have custom drift boats that are large, and have plenty of room. Comfortable chairs, all movable so we can be more affective. There are times when we see a dry weather trend and will often fish floats and jigs. We have custom jigs, and have premium floats and rods for this. Most of the time jigs are small, in the 1/8 oz size, and lighter lines as well. During the winter, it is generally cool, and damp conditions. Often freezing. Dressing warm, having a good hat, and raingear is the rule. Atleast having good clothing close at hand. At times, the weather can be nice and the scenery is often spectacular. Nice bright fresh fish, and sporty weather. A "hearty soul" type of fishing, but a lot of fun...
